Texas Association of Sports Officials

The Pecan Valley Football Chapter is looking for help with the upcoming football season. We officiate Junior High all the way up to Varsity football on Thursday and Friday nights. In addition, our chapter covers the local Pop Warner Games on Saturday. So, we have plenty of work for those willing to do it. There are many reasons to become an official and here are a few answers about why we do it. If any of the following look promising, then we welcome you to the next meeting to see what the Pecan Valley football chapter is all about.
Some reasons to become a football official:

  • You love the game of football
  • If you love football, officiating is the best way to stay involved in the game. The great thing about being an official is that you actually get to be on the field and not on the sidelines. It also improves your knowledge of the game while watching college and NFL games over the weekend.

  • It's a great way to stay in shape
  • Officiating provides a meaningful reason to stay in shape. As we get older, many adults find it more difficult to find the time to exercise. Calling football games gives you the opportunity to get out of the house two or three times a week and participate in an enjoyable and rewarding physical activity.

  • For the Excitement
  • As an official on the field, you are many times privy to the best hits, blocks, and individual plays during the game. Being part of the action and hearing the crowd react to a great play really makes it all worthwhile.

  • Be a positive role model
  • Officiating provides a unique opportunity to positively influence young people. The official is a role model who is charged with enforcing the concepts of fair play and good sportsmanship.

  • For the competitor in you
  • Officiating appeals strongly to the competitive spirit that all of us possess. The successful official is a fierce competitor who enjoys the opportunity to work with teammates toward a common goal of officiating a good game.

  • Personal development
  • Football officiating requires you to make instantaneous decisions, resolve conflicts, and deal with stress and pressure. It demands good communications and reasoning skills. In addition, studying and leading new things instills the concept of continual learning which carries over into other areas of life.

  • Make lifelong friends
  • Your fellow officials can become your friends for life. A tremendous bond is developed between officials as they work together for the common good and can only be fully explained after you've experienced it.

  • For the Money
  • Football officiating is not an extremely lucrative hobby, but then again, you will see a positive cash flow. Unlike other hobbies, the time spent at officiating will put some money in your pockets. Active members can make about $60.00 - $150.00 per week and perhaps more with time and experience.

What it takes to be an official:

  1. You must be able to attend weekly meetings on Monday afternoon starting at 6:30 at Room 136 of Newman Hall (right across the street from Brookshire's). Each meeting lasts about 1-2 hours where we teach the rules and mechanics of the game. Other (non mandatory) clinics and workshops are available throughout the year to better educate ourselves to the rules and mechanics of the game.

  2. We accept members from 18 years on up; however, you need to be out of high school to participate. Note: Members are unable to officiate their high school varsity teams for approximately 10 years. Still, there are tons of other teams to stay busy with.

  3. Officials must be in relatively good shape and be able to do some short sprinting, and jogging. The more you officiate the better shape you will become.

  4. Must be honest, moral, ethical, and dependable. Officials are the third team on the field at every game. You count on your fellow officials, and they will count on you.

  5. You must have a clean legal record and do not participate in any illegal activities.

  6. You must be available on Thursday evenings for sub varsity games and Friday's nights for varsity games. Thursday night is the best training for our newer officials and as you progress, more and more varsity games will be available. We leave for Thursday and Friday games at about 5PM.

  7. Lastly, we can accommodate officials outside of Brownwood, and will do our best to referee games in your immediate area. We have officials in Comanche, Hamilton, Cross Plains, Stephenville, Santa Anna and many other area's who regularly call games.
